Jules Herman, Former Trumpeter for Lawrence Welk, Dead at 93
Jules Herman, a former trumpet player for Lawrence Welk and the leader of the house orchestra at the former Prom Ballroom in St. Paul for 35 years, has died at age 93. Herman died Friday of heart failure at his home in Mendota Heights, said his daughter, Bonnie Herman, of Chicago. Funeral services were Tuesday.
Herman grew up on a farm near Milnor, N.D., and attended Moorhead State College in Minnesota. After getting his degree in the early 1930s, he taught music in Gardner, N.D., until a fellow North Dakotan, Welk, asked him to join his orchestra.
In 1940 Herman married singer Lois Best, one of several female musicians Welk featured over the years with the title "Champagne Lady."
